Description
The purpose of this talk is to share lessons learned in respect of alienating parenting behaviour. The concepts ‘Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)’ and ‘Parental Alienation (PA)’ are contested terrain. The presenter examines ways to avoid the minefield of medical model diagnoses through the use of a psychodynamic framework, while still paying attention to this ubiquitous and destructive aspect of high parental conflict.
Although the presenter’s experience of alienating parenting behaviour stems largely from her expertise in forensic assessments, the talk might be useful to any practitioner working with children and parents, especially those in conflict. The talk will address the development of a framework for psycho-legal matters dealing with alienating behaviour, examine some of the contextual issues, and share examples from matters dealt with.
