January 27 2025: Cinnamon now has a brother. His name is Paddy, although I would like him to be Streak, as in ‘Streak of good fortune”. Paddy (for now) is a 2-year old German Shepherd/Malinois (?Shepinois) who went blind over the last four months and is now sightless. I will post a pic or vid of him, and him with Cinnamon, but I want to share this story about him. I was walking him with his previous owner for the first time, at my much-traversed favourite local park. We were walking round the wire fence enclosure of a blue Astroturf outdoor hockey field. Suddenly Paddy disappeared onto the field, and hung around there, where we could not see him. I have walked in that park for almost twenty years, but never noticed the very narrow one-person gap in fence for people to go through to get onto the court. On the side where we were walking, the rounded overhang protecting the team bench on the field made it impossible to see the team bench, from the back or the sides. The owner eventually called Paddy and he returned to us. On our way back, Paddy again slipped through the narrow gap and disappeared, hanging around there without coming back to us. I asked the owner what he thought Paddy was doing – there wasn’t any interesting-smelling grass or poo or pee to attract him, just the ugly plasticky turf. He didn’t know, so we followed Paddy in. He was standing at the middle of the bench, unmoving, alongside a big fat leather purse someone had left lying on the bench, stuffed full with credit cards, money, driver’s license, and money. We took the purse to security and left.

Thoughts & Things

I told a wise friend that I had been in a plane and, looking down through a wispy cloud, seen the cloud reflected in a patch of shimmering water on deep green fields below. I said that I had felt strangely moved. He understood, immediately, and without pause responded: “Yes, you saw the top and bottom of the cloud at the same time”.

Cinnamon wrote to Muttneg that I was cooking ‘agayn’. ‘Scons’, she spelled, ‘cheez scons, she sez they helthy becors they are hole-eat scons, I don’t know why, becors they don’t have holes. But they do taste very nice’. Later, Cinnamon told me that Muttneg replied that her jumin also makes scons, and she puts in something called muttneg or nutmeg or something like that, and that Muttneg, being so small and full-stop-like, gets a bit ‘shiverus’ when her jumin is looking for the muttneg, becors she doesn’t know if her jumin means her.
